If you look at your website like it is your home, you will likely discover that it’s time for a spring cleaning. Just as some of your closets and drawers are full of stuff you don’t need anymore, your website may need a junk purge as well.
How current is your website? Many businesses are excited to get a new website, launch it and then forget about it. Then it becomes outdated and stale. When you look at your site, think about two things: What content is outdated and, what content never gets looked at.
I would venture to guess that the majority of websites have outdated content. I was looking at a site this morning and saw a photo of a person in the “Meet Our Team” section that had retired a year ago. That tells me this business does not update or review their website very often. Some areas to look at are news archives, events, blogs, work samples, etc. These are usually the clutter culprits and need to be cleaned up.
Continuing with the house analogy, you may have extra “rooms” that you don’t need any more because no one is using them. Look at your Google Analytics and see where your visitors are going, or not going. If there has been no traffic to a page for a year, you can get rid of it. When we redesign a new site for a client, we always check the analytics and plan the site accordingly. We often remove pages that are never viewed.
Take the time to look at your website and clean out a closet or two. It will be a positive refection on your business. Oh, and a website that is updated regularly, is looked upon favorably by Google and your rankings could improve.
