Marketing Options From Days Gone By – Still Relevant?

As I’ve mentioned before, my wife sometimes refers to me as a hoarder. I’d agree with her on some things, and as it turns out, I am also a bit of a digital hoarder.

This week, I was perusing some old columns and articles I wrote a while back, in 2005 to be exact. One in particular was an article I wrote for a magazine about the top 60 ways to market your business. For fun, I thought I would share the list with you. As you will quickly notice, there is no mention of any kind of social media, Google ads, geo-targeting, etc. However, there is still a lot that is still relevant that you might have forgotten about. How many of these are you still using to market your business?

  1. Marketing Plan
  2. Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
  3. Business Card
  4. Stationery
  5. Logo
  6. Testimonials
  7. Staff training in customer service and sales including up sell and cross sell.
  8. Brochures
  9. Reports and White Papers
  10. Client Questionnaires
  11. Surveys
  12. Web Site
  13. Web Site – SEO
  14. Opt-in Ezine
  15. Video
  16. CD
  17. Toll Free Number – recorded menu driven information messages.
  18. Automated voice broadcast messages.
  19. Telemarketing
  20. Phone – on hold message
  21. Customer database
  22. List broker
  23. Prospecting letters
  24. Customer reactivation letter
  25. Postcards
  26. Research studies
  27. Outdoor signage
  28. Trade shows
  29. Joint ventures
  30. Endorsed mailings
  31. Referral programs
  32. Classified ads
  33. Newspaper ads
  34. Sales training
  35. Take one boxes
  36. Door hangers
  37. Chamber of Commerce membership
  38. Community involvement
  39. Free information
  40. Charity fundraising
  41. Free workshops
  42. Free consultations
  43. Public speaking
  44. Write a book
  45. Articles and columns
  46. Public relations
  47. Press Release
  48. Media appearances/contact
  49. Yellow pages ad
  50. Newsletter
  51. Open house
  52. Radio and TV
  53. Testing and measuring ROI
  54. Database – birthday, anniversary, special event marketing
  55. Database – segmentation
  56. Follow up system
  57. Outstanding customer service
  58. Thank you notes and cards
  59. Fax back, broadcast fax
  60. Annual Calendar

Interesting, isn’t it. A lot has changed but a lot hasn’t either. If I had to revise this list today, top of the list would be social media and digital marketing.
