According to the TV folks “TV is the more influential, authoritative, powerful, effective, persuasive, engaging and relevant” compared to other mediums. And you know what? I agree.
Adults 25 – 54 on average spend over 24 hours a week watching their TV, and it is still the primary source of information and entertainment for Canadians. I’m not making this up. It is the latest data from the 2014 BBM market survey.
Yes, it is more expensive than radio, newspaper and online. But it is more expensive for a reason. It can reach way more people than the other mediums. Take a look at the ad rates from CTV. You can get a 30 second ad on Dr. Phil for under $70.00. You can also get a 30 second ad on Big Bang Theory for much more than that. What is the better buy? Big Bang Theory hands down, it is the number one show in the Maritimes, by a wide margin. Rates are tied to audience size. The Theory is, you get the Biggest Bang for your buck. (sorry, I couldn’t resist)
Yes, in this day of NetFlix, Apple TV and PVRs, TV advertising has lost some of its effectiveness. But, the other mediums have as well. In my opinion, it is still the best way to reach the most people. If you are still not sure, call you local TV rep. and have them take you through the latest numbers. They can also set up a schedule based on your budget and target market. They make it quite easy.
The top five shows in the Maritimes are Big Bang Theory, CTV News at 6, The Amazing Race, Survivor and How To Get Away With Murder. I’m not sure what this says about us Maritimers, but regardless, they are a good place to advertise.
